These flexible acrylic tongue retainers are available in 14,12, 10, and 8 gauge. The wearable length of all four is slightly longer than 1/2" but not quite 5/8". The tongue retainer is grooved to hold the included o-ring in place.

I bought this when I became a massage therapist. It definitely does the trick. It was not noticeable, it does feel quite different from a regular tongue ring though.

This is exactly the type of straight retainer that I was looking for. Bonus points for the groove on the open side of the bar that keeps the little o-ring secured!
